Sella descent in summer: June, July, August or September?

June, July, August and September on the Sella are four very different experiences. Real data, 2026 events and an honest recommendation by profile.

In one sentence: the Sella descent in summer is not a uniform block — June, July, August and September are four very different experiences. Here is the month-by-month comparison with water temperature, real crowd levels, 2026 events and our honest recommendation depending on your profile.

When someone says "I'm going to paddle the Sella this summer", what they are really talking about is four very different sets of weekends. A Tuesday in June with water at 13 °C and an empty valley is nothing like a Saturday 15 August with the sun beating down and thousands of people on the river. And even less like a Sunday in September, when the water is still warm but the riverside bars are already folding up the parasols.

At Aventura en el Sella we have spent more than 25 years guiding families down this stretch (4.5★ from 147 reviews) and the question we hear most in May is always the same: "which summer month is best to paddle?". The short answer: it depends what you are after. The long answer is this month-by-month comparison, with real data from the Arriondas-Ribadesella stretch.

The Sella in summer: four months, four different landscapes. June still spring-green, September turning to ochres.

Summer on the Sella at a glance

Before getting into the weeds, a quick snapshot of summer. Average figures for the Arriondas-Ribadesella area, the stretch where the tourist descent takes place:

  • June → air 18-22 °C · water 12-15 °C · low-to-medium crowds · high flow. Landscape at its greenest peak, wetsuit recommended.
  • July → air 22-25 °C · water 14-17 °C · medium crowds · medium flow. The ideal balance: good weather and still manageable.
  • August → air 24-28 °C · water 16-19 °C · high crowds · low-to-medium flow. Full heat, every riverside bar open, river closed on 8 August.
  • September → air 20-24 °C · water 15-18 °C · medium-to-low crowds · medium flow. Water still warm, landscape turning ochre.

If we had to bet on a single month for a first family visit: late June or the first fortnight of September. Good weather, water at a reasonable temperature and no queues at the boarding point. But let us go into the detail of each one, because the nuance matters. For the full picture including spring and autumn, see our guide to the best time of year for the Sella descent.

June · the summer that still smells like spring

June is the transition month. The active season has been open since April, but it is not until June that the valley really fills up. Schools are still in session for the first fortnight and you notice it: parking with space, riverside bars without queues, photos without strangers in the background.

What you can expect to find:

  • Air temperature: 18-22 °C on average, with the odd warmer day in the final week.
  • Water temperature: 12-15 °C. If you take a tumble (which happens now and then) you do feel the chill. We recommend a short wetsuit especially for little ones and anyone who feels the cold.
  • Flow: still high. The river runs with gentle force and there are no stretches where the canoe scrapes the bottom — something that does happen in August.
  • Landscape: the Sella valley in June is at its greenest. The banks have not dried out, there are wildflowers and the gorges look more imposing.
  • Crowds: low on weekdays, medium at weekends (especially from 20 June onwards).

June works really well for families who can take a long weekend or a weekday off, couples and groups looking for calm and crowd-free photos, and anyone coming from far away who wants to combine the descent with hikes in the Picos (in June the Lakes are not yet saturated).

Things to bear in mind: the wetsuit is no longer optional if you are coming with small children. Some riverside bars only open Friday to Sunday in the first fortnight. From 21-22 June onwards they are all in full swing (the six riverside bars along the route: Riverland, El Oasis, El Prau, El Bosque, La Mediana and Toraño).

July · the balance of the summer

July is probably the most "balanced" month of the summer. By now it really is hot, the water has warmed up, every riverside bar is open, but the river has not yet hit August saturation. For a lot of people it is the ideal month.

  • Air temperature: 22-25 °C on average, with full-sun days when you fancy diving into any of the pools.
  • Water temperature: 14-17 °C. Still fresh but no longer breath-stopping. Most people paddle without a wetsuit.
  • Flow: medium. The river has lost a bit of strength but there is still enough current to help with the paddling.
  • Crowds: low-to-medium on weekdays, high at weekends (Saturdays from 15 July in particular).
  • Atmosphere: every riverside bar at full season, soft music, people having lunch, kids jumping into the water off the flat stones.

July works brilliantly for families with little ones who have just finished school looking for warmth without choking on the heat, groups of friends and stag or hen parties who want the buzz without fighting for a spot at the bar, and anyone looking to combine Sella and beach (in July the beaches of Ribadesella and La Vega are at a good temperature but not yet packed).

Saturdays in July are busy. If you are coming on a Saturday, book 7-10 days ahead. Weekdays are a completely different story: the photos look like they were taken in another month.

August · the most intense month (and the trickiest)

August is the classic Spanish August: dry heat, valley at full capacity, Cangas de Onís packed, every car park in the valley taken by eleven in the morning. It is the month of the best weather and the worst crowds. It is also the month with the biggest events of the year.

  • Air temperature: 24-28 °C on average. Peaks of 30-32 °C in the first fortnight are not unusual.
  • Water temperature: 16-19 °C. It is the warmest water of the year. Plenty of people bathe in the pools without feeling cold.
  • Flow: low to medium. On specific stretches the canoe may scrape the bottom if you are heavily loaded. It is under control and the instructors warn you.
  • Crowds: HIGH, especially from 1 to 20 August.
  • Particularly busy days: 15 August (Asunción holiday) and the week of 14-16, which concentrates the annual peak of visits.
Saturday 8 August · International Sella Descent

The big international canoeing festival. On that day the river is closed to tourism: the Confederación Hidrográfica blocks the watercourse. If your plan is to watch the race, perfect: the atmosphere in Arriondas and Ribadesella is something else. If your plan is to paddle the river yourself, look at Friday 7 or Sunday 9. More detail on the dedicated page about the International Sella Descent and its history since 1929.

August suits people coming from far away on long holidays, families who prefer full heat (perfect for combining river and intensive beach days) and anyone after a festive atmosphere who does not mind the background buzz.

If you come in August, two rules: book two weeks in advance and start early. Arriving in Arriondas by 9:30-10:00 am saves you an hour of driving around looking for a space. And on 8 August, better as a spectator.

September · the best-kept secret of the Sella

If we had to recommend a single month to a mum with small kids who cannot stand extreme heat or crowds, no hesitation: September. People who have come once in September tend to come back in September.

  • Air temperature: 20-24 °C on average. Soft warmth, fresh mornings, pleasant afternoons.
  • Water temperature: 15-18 °C. The water still holds the heat accumulated through summer. One of the months with the best temperature/enjoyment ratio.
  • Flow: medium. Light rain starts in Asturias by the end of the month, which brings flow back to optimum levels.
  • Crowds: medium-to-low. The first week still has some people, but from 8 September (Day of Asturias) it drops sharply and the river empties out.
  • Landscape: the subtle colour shift starts. Still intense green, but the first yellows are already showing on the maples. Photographically, the prettiest month of summer.

September shines for families with little ones who cannot stand August heat (we go deeper into it in Sella descent with small kids), couples on a romantic getaway, photographers and nature lovers, and visitors with a pet: fewer people means the dog is more relaxed.

Things to bear in mind: the days are shorter. While in July the river closes at 6 pm with plenty of time for everything, in September it is wise to set off before 12 noon to avoid feeling rushed. The odd light Asturian shower, which passes in an hour. Some riverside bars close from 20 September onwards; the main ones hold out until early October.

How to pick your month · a quick guide by profile

If you are still hesitating after the whole comparison, this simplifies it:

  • Families with small children (5-10 years old) → Late June or September. Calm, clean photos, less crowded river.
  • Families with teenagers → July on weekdays or early August. Atmosphere and warm water.
  • Groups of friends and stag or hen parties → July and August. Saturdays with buzz, riverside bars at full tilt.
  • Couples on a getaway → June or September. A more intimate river, frame-worthy photos.
  • Visitors with a pet → June or September. Fewer people = a more relaxed dog.
  • Anyone after the event → First weekend of August (the International) as a spectator, not for paddling the river.
  • First time on the Sella → Last week of June or first fortnight of September. The best "middle ground" for anyone who has never been.

If you are worried about the physical effort, there is a dedicated article on that: is the Sella descent very tiring? (spoiler: no, there are stretches where the river carries the canoe on its own). And if you want to understand the exact timings on the water, we break them down in how long the descent takes.

How to book and what is included in any month

At Aventura en el Sella we keep the same rules all summer long, so nothing changes depending on the month:

  • Single price: €35 adults · €25 children up to 12 · pets free. Full 2026 prices.
  • Always included: canoe, paddle, life jacket, optional wetsuit, instructor, pick-up in Ribadesella and our own supervised car park.
  • Minimum age: 5 years old and 1.15 m height. For life-jacket safety, we cannot go below that.
  • Groups: maximum K3 (triple canoe) per craft. For large groups, we organise a coordinated departure.
  • Booking: via web, WhatsApp, phone or email. We do not take walk-in bookings at the desk "while passing by": we want to make sure the canoe and time are reserved for you.
  • The river closes at 6 pm by order of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico. It is wise to set off before 1 pm.
If you want extra comfort: Premium window 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

Our Premium option works with an open window from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm: within that window you arrive whenever it suits you, there is no exact time to choose. It is the slot with the least river saturation, the best light for photos and the one we recommend for families and couples who want a calm start. Departure from our boarding point in Arriondas and pick-up in Ribadesella.

Summer on the Sella is for enjoying, not surviving

Whichever month you pick, the Sella descent in summer is still what it has always been: 14.5 km of Asturian river through green gorges, riverside bars on the bank, a swim at a quiet river beach in the sun and a finish in Ribadesella with the smell of the sea. The difference between enjoying it and feeling overwhelmed is in picking the right date and booking with a clear head.

If you want to understand the route in detail before coming, take a look at the Sella descent from Arriondas (the village where it all starts) and the Pozo del Arco, the most photographed spot on the river. And if you want to make a longer day of it after paddling, we tell you what to do in Ribadesella after the descent and where to stay near the river.

If after reading all this you still have doubts, drop us a line. We have spent 25 years doing this and we know every riverside bar on the route by name. We tell you who is behind the project in the team from Arriondas and you can read what the families who have already come say in reviews. For directions, we have it all spelled out in how to get to Arriondas; for anything else, contact.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Which summer month is best for the Sella descent?

If you want good weather without the crowds, aim for late June or the first fortnight of September. If you are after warmer water and full holiday buzz, August (skipping Saturday 8 August, the day of the International, and the week of 14-16). For the perfect balance, weekdays in July.

Is there a price difference between months?

No. The price is the same all summer long: €35 adults, €25 children up to 12, pets free. It includes canoe, instructor, optional wetsuit and pick-up. The full breakdown is on 2026 prices.

Is the water very cold in June?

The water sits around 12-15 °C. It does not take your breath away, but you do feel the chill on first contact. We recommend a short wetsuit especially for children and anyone who feels the cold. The wetsuit is included at no extra cost whenever you need it.

Can the Sella be paddled every day in August?

Almost every day. The exception is the day of the International Sella Descent, which in 2026 falls on Saturday 8 August: the Confederación closes the river to tourism. The days before and after are paddled as normal.

How long does the descent take in summer?

Between 2.5 and 4 hours, depending on the stops you make at pools and riverside bars. In August, with low flow, it stretches closer to 3.5-4 h. In June it can drop to 2.5-3 h. The river closes at 6 pm by order of the Confederación, so it is wise to set off before 1 pm.

Can I bring the dog in summer?

Yes, all summer long. Pets come along free of charge and we provide the canine life jacket. In peak August, better to set off early (10:00-11:00 am) to avoid the hottest hours. June and September are the best months for paddling with a dog. We go deeper into it in Sella descent with a dog.

When should I book?

August and Saturdays in July: 10-14 days ahead. June and September on weekdays: 2-3 days usually does it. Booking in advance is always the safer option because it guarantees canoe and time slot. If your plan is same-day and there is availability, that also works; we confirm by WhatsApp or phone.
