Coverage: stag and hen parties, birthdays, silver weddings, friend gatherings, companies with real team building, big families, friend crews. If you thought the Sella descent was only for 2 people in a canoe, here we explain how it is organised when there are 8, 20 or 50 of you.
In the last 25 years we have seen everything on the Sella: hen parties with costumes, weddings that complete the weekend with the descent on Saturday, companies measuring team cohesion on the river, crews who have been paddling together since they were 18. The river adapts well to groups — you just need to organise it with a bit of head.
This guide explains how we approach the descent in groups, what advantages it has, what to think about in advance and what questions always come up in group bookings.
Why the Sella works for groups
Six reasons stag/hen parties, companies and big families come back to the Sella year after year.
For everyone
Athletes and non-athletes enjoy it equally · no fitness required to step into the canoe.
Built-in atmosphere
Snack bars, stops, photos · it is not just the river, it is a full day plan.
Bounded price
€30 kids · €40 adults, all included. No surprises at the end.
Manageable duration
Mini Sella · 1h 30-2h 30. Full route · 3-5h. You choose according to the group's pace.
Memorable photos
Canoes in line, splashes at Pozo del Arco, picnic on the bank. Plenty of content for socials.
Flexibility
If someone does not want to paddle, they stay in Arriondas without trouble · cafés, square and riverside walk nearby.

Stag and hen parties
If there is one type of group that asks for the Sella again and again, it is stag/hen parties. And rightly: it is a full outdoor day plan, compatible with mixed ages (grandma, cousin, friend from work), with photos for the bride or groom, and an atmosphere that does not tire.
The typical recipe for a hen party on the Sella
- Arrival in Arriondas. Registration, changing rooms, costumes if you brought them (they fit in the locked lockers).
- Mini-class. Ten minutes · used for the first jokes and a photo before going down to the river.
- Launch. Mandatory group photo from the ramp before starting.
- Stop at Pozo del Arco. Swim, group photo, Asturian picnic at a good hour if you fancy.
- Stop at a snack bar on the route. Drink, music, laughs · usually El Oasis or El Bosque. No alcohol on the river · leave it for after.
- Arrival at Toraño or Fríes. Return transfer to Arriondas.
- Showers and change. At the facilities · hot water and changing rooms included.
- Post-descent meal. Cider house in Arriondas, Cangas or Ribadesella · we recommend places if you ask.
- Book 2-3 weeks ahead in August · Saturdays fill up fast.
- Matching-colour t-shirts for the whole group · memorable photos from the river.
- No alcohol on the river. It is prohibited by regulation and the snack bars do not serve it · leave it for the post-descent meal.
- Be careful with bulky costumes in the canoe · they should be comfortable and able to get wet.
- Let us know if anyone is pregnant · they cannot paddle, but they can wait in Arriondas without trouble.
Companies and team building
The Sella works well as a company activity because it has no physical entry barrier (nobody is left out for not being in shape), it generates conversation between colleagues who normally do not interact, and it leaves a shared memory that lasts months.
For companies we usually offer:
- Dedicated time slot — the whole group launches together.
- Certified instructors on the river watching the route (briefing class beforehand + safety kayaks during the day).
- Asturian picnic reinforced if it is a long event — pie, traditional bun, cheese, extra fruit.
- Tax invoice to the company's tax ID.
- Coordination with local accommodation or catering if needed.
The typical company plan is early arrival on Premium open hours (10:30-11:00), Full route descent, post-meal at a cider house near Arriondas or Cangas. With 30-40 people it is comfortably organised. If you are 60+, let's talk and we will see how.
Birthdays, families and big gatherings
Birthdays (especially 40, 50, 60) and anniversaries are another classic. The key here is that in a family group there are very mixed ages — from 8-year-old cousins to 75-year-old grandparents. The Sella descent handles it well because:
- Canoes up to 3 seats (K3) allow combinations of couples + a child, three friends, or a grandparent with two grandchildren. For big groups we spread across several canoes by age.
- Mini Sella adapts to elders' level — 7 km is enough to celebrate the day.
- Everyone sees everyone at the stops. It is not a solitary activity, it is a shared experience.
Family dinners are forgotten. Sella descents with three generations are remembered — and usually end up on someone's living-room wall printed at A3.
How we organise the booking
Step by step what we ask big groups for:
- Exact number of people — broken down by adults and children (up to 12).
- Specific date + one alternative.
- Preferred arrival time — hours are open between 10:30 and 12:30. If you have a preference (more empty river in the morning, more atmosphere at midday), tell us and we will advise.
- Route — Mini Sella (7 km) or Full route (14.5 km).
- Notes — pregnancies (excluded), people with special needs, picnic allergies, name of the birthday person or the bride/groom.
- Single contact details — one person responsible for coordinating with us.
With that we send you a closed quote, payment options (Bizum, transfer, card, payment link) and confirm the booking. For groups of 15+ we ask for 30-50% deposit to lock the slot, the rest on arrival.
The best dates for a group
- June and September: the two best months. Mild climate, lively river, fewer crowds, better prices at nearby accommodation.
- July and August: the classics. More atmosphere at the snack bars, but you need to book ahead (2-3 weeks minimum) and Saturdays fill up.
- May and October: valid if you go with adults and technical clothing. Less operating but very calm.
- Saturday of the International Sella Descent: the Saturday in August set by the Federation (in 2026 · 8 August). Spectacular plan if the event interests you · that day we offer a single tourist launch at 12:00 (€35 per person, limited spots, booking up to 2 days before). If you are a large group, plan the date weeks ahead.

Group price
The base rate is the same as individuals: €30 per child (≤12) and €40 per adult, all included. See full breakdown at Sella descent prices. From 15-20 people we can consider special terms — we do not promise discounts as standard, but we do study it by date, slot and services.
If you are after the top-of-mind plan, Premium Booking reinforces the picnic, adds services and makes a very well-crafted detail for special occasions — ideal for stag/hen parties and round-number birthdays.
What you need to know in 6 points
- From 8-10 people it is handled as a group.
- You can book a dedicated time slot, but you cannot "close" the river.
- Base price €30 kid / €40 adult, all included.
- Book 2-3 weeks in advance in August.
- People who do not want to paddle wait in Arriondas without trouble.
- For groups 15+ write to us with date, number and slot for a closed quote.
Have a group in mind and want ideas? Write to us with the basics and we will give you a concrete proposal within 24 hours. In August, two weeks ahead is the reasonable minimum — in June or September you have margin.
What you ask us most
- From how many people is it considered a group?
In practice, from 8 people we already talk about a group, because it involves coordinating canoes, schedules and transfer. From 15 people we treat it as a group booking with a single contact and margin to customise the picnic, time and stops. No strict minimum: in 25 years we have organised everything from couples to coaches of 60 people.
- Do you do Sella descents for stag or hen parties?
Yes. Stag/hen parties are one of our favourite plans — good vibes, laughs and the Sella takes care of the rest. Since the schedule is Premium · open hours, you arrive at the facilities between 10:30 and 12:30 · no fixed time. If you want the calmer river feel, arrive early (10:30-11:00) · if you prefer a lively midday, arrive around 12:00. Remember to book in advance (August fills up fast) and that no alcohol is consumed on the river — leave it for the post-descent meal.
- Can the descent be booked exclusively for a group?
The river is public, so it cannot be "privatised". We can reserve a specific time slot so the whole group launches together, with explanatory class adapted to the group size, certified instructors watching the river during the day and special treatment at reception. If you are a very large group (30+), write to us and we will see how to organise it.
- What do we do if some of the group do not want to paddle?
It is common: in almost every stag/hen or family event there is someone who prefers not to paddle. Arriondas has cafés, a square and a riverside walk for them to wait calmly, and they can join the group at the final snack bar. Those who paddle pay normal price, those who do not, do not pay.
- Is there a group discount?
It depends on volume. From 15-20 people we can consider special terms. Write to the contact form with exact number of people, preferred date and ages (to separate kids/adults) and we will send a closed quote.
- What clothes do you recommend for groups?
The same list as for any descent — we have it in full at what to bring for the Sella descent. A specific group tip: matching colour or slogan t-shirts look great in photos from the river. Many hen parties do it and the images are spectacular.
