Types of accommodation and for whom

Four different formulas by whether you travel as a couple, family, group or campervan.

Hotels

Urban and rural in Arriondas and Cangas. Ideal for couples · breakfast included, 24h reception, good value outside August.

Rural houses

The most authentic option · restored village houses with fireplace, garden, home cooking. For families or rural getaways · rented by night or weekend.

Tourist apartments

Flexible and autonomous · own kitchen, several bedrooms, terrace if you are lucky. For groups of 4-6 or stays of 3+ nights with kids who need space.

Campsite · campervan

Campsites along the Sella · pitches, bungalows and campervan zones. We have our own 300-space parking with campervan access · you can come straight to the shop if you do not need supervised overnight.

Five things to look out for

  1. Own or nearby parking. In central Arriondas spaces are scarce in high season. Confirm if the accommodation includes parking.
  2. Check-in hours. If you arrive late after the descent, verify they have flexible reception. Small hotels and rural houses may close at 22:00.
  3. Pet policy. If you come with a dog (free in our canoe and boards the transfer at the end of the route without trouble), make sure the accommodation also admits them.
  4. Breakfast included or available nearby. If you want to arrive early on Premium open hours (10:30) and the accommodation does not serve breakfast, have a plan B. Arriondas has cafés that open early.
  5. Recent reviews. Look at reviews from the last 6 months — accommodations change managers, services and prices. What was worth it two years ago may have changed.

Book by season

  • April-May: almost always room. 1-2 weeks ahead is enough.
  • June and September: perfect balance · good climate + availability. Book 2-3 weeks ahead.
  • July: strong demand starts. Book 1 month minimum, especially on weekends.
  • August: peak month · book 1-2 months in advance. The Saturday of the International Descent (in 2026 · 8 August) saturates all of eastern Asturias — if you go that weekend, much further ahead.
  • October: calm returns. Book 1-2 weeks ahead.

Multi-day plans

If you will be in the area 2-3 days, here is how accommodation fits depending on the plan you have in mind.

Sella + Picos de Europa

Sleep in Cangas de Onís or nearby villages. One day descent, another Lakes of Covadonga, afternoon free.

Sella + sea

Sleep in Ribadesella. Descent one day, Santa Marina or Vega beaches the next.

Calm family getaway

Sleep in a rural house in a village. Descent, walks and Asturian gastronomy without moving much.

Intensive plan with car

Base in Arriondas, move radially · Picos, beaches, Covadonga. Best time-distance ratio for the demanding traveller.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Where do you recommend staying to do the Sella descent?

The most practical is to sleep in Arriondas or a few kilometres away — avoids early commutes and lets you arrive at our facilities whenever suits you between 10:30 and 12:30 (Premium open hours · you do not pick a specific time). If you already have a base in Cangas de Onís, Ribadesella or nearby villages, that also works: 12-25 minutes by car to our shop.

In this guide we mention some nearby accommodation as friendly orientation. We do not handle reservations, do not charge commission and have no liability over the services they provide — we recommend as friends, nothing more.

Does Aventura en el Sella have a commission or commercial deal with the accommodations?

No. No commercial agreement, no commission, no arrangement with any of the accommodation we mention. We recommend by proximity and because we know they are serious places near our facilities. To book, contact each establishment directly through their own channels (website, phone, booking platforms).

How far in advance should I book accommodation in Arriondas?

In July and August, 1-2 months ahead minimum. Weekends fill up first, and especially the one of the International Sella Descent (Saturday in August set each year by the Federation · in 2026 8 August), when all of eastern Asturias is saturated. In June and September there is more margin (2-3 weeks). In low season (April-May, October) there is almost always room.

Is there a campsite near the Sella descent?

Yes, there are several campsites in the Arriondas-Cangas area by the river, some with pitches, bungalows and zones for campervans. Since we have our own parking for 300 cars and campervans at the shop, many people travelling by campervan come directly. For overnight camping, check available options online via their official websites before coming — we do not list specific names to avoid confusion.

Hotels, rural houses or apartments? Which to choose?

Depends on the plan: hotel if you want services (breakfast, 24h reception); rural house if you travel as a group or family and want authentic Asturian atmosphere; tourist apartment if you want more autonomy or stays of several days. What matters: that they have parking if you come by car, and clarify the check-in time if you arrive late after the descent.

Can I arrive at the descent early if I sleep far away?

Yes, but calculate the real time. From Oviedo it is 50 minutes by car, from Gijón 55, from Santander 1h 45 (more detail in how to get to Arriondas). Since hours are open, you must arrive at our Arriondas facilities between 10:30 and 12:30. Sleeping nearby simplifies the morning a lot, especially if coming from outside Asturias.
