Sella descent safety: the measures, the kit and the rules

Is it safe? Yes, with a few simple rules. Certified life jacket included, qualified instructors, unsinkable canoe and Grade I-II rapids. Knowing how to swim is compulsory by law.

Child paddling with a certified life jacket on the Sella descent, a safe activity for families

In one sentence: the Sella descent is a safe, family-friendly activity, as long as a few simple rules are respected. We tell you with complete transparency what the safety measures are, what kit is included, the instructors' training, the compulsory requirements and what we do when the weather has the final say. No marketing: just what really matters.

It is the question parents ask us most before booking: "but is it safe?". The short answer is yes, and the long one is this guide. We would rather tell you everything plainly so you come along relaxed, because trust is earned with honest information, not with promises.

Is the Sella descent safe? The honest answer

The tourist stretch of the Sella (Arriondas–Ribadesella) runs through calm water with the odd gentle Grade I-II rapid, the easiest category there is. It is not a risky activity or an extreme-adrenaline one: it is a nature day out suitable for families, from the age of 5. That said, it is an activity on a real river, so it has rules to follow; precisely because they are followed, it is safe.

Qualified instructors: training and watching the river

Our team is made up of qualified instructors. Their safety work has two parts:

  • The short briefing before you set off: basic paddle technique, how to sit, what to do in a rapid and how to act if you capsize. Five minutes that change everything.
  • Watching the watercourse: during the descent, the instructors are spread along the river in case anyone needs help. They do not ride in your canoe (you go down at your own pace), but they keep an eye on the route.

Only if the river conditions require it (for example, an occasional spate) may an instructor accompany the group; in that case, we let you know in advance when you book or by WhatsApp.

The safety kit is included

  • Certified life jacket: compulsory, included and worn throughout the activity. Available in all sizes, children's included.
  • Stable, unsinkable canoe: open, 1 to 3 seats (K1, K2, K3), designed not to sink even if water gets in. With a backrest as standard.
  • Dry barrel for your phone and keys, and free neoprene when the water is cold (the instructor decides; not needed in warm summer weather).
  • Canine life jacket for your pet, which we put on.

Compulsory requirements (by law and for safety)

For the activity to be safe, there are a few requirements that admit no exception:

  • Knowing how to swim is compulsory by law for everyone, children included. It is required by the insurers and by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico. The life jacket is an aid, not a substitute. We explain this in depth in the Sella descent for beginners.
  • Minimum age: 5 years old and 1.15 m tall. It is not only about the life jacket: it is also down to the nature of the river and the requirements of the insurers. No exceptions. More in the Sella descent with kids.
  • Closed shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops).
  • No alcohol during the activity: it is a safety rule on the river.

Insurance: cover included

We operate with the compulsory civil liability and accident insurance, included in the price of the activity. It is one of the reasons the requirements (knowing how to swim, the minimum age) are non-negotiable: they are not a whim of ours, they are part of the conditions of the insurance that protects you.

The weather and the river: when you go down and when you don't

Safety always comes before the booking. Our criterion is clear and honest:

  • In ordinary rain, the river is operational and you go down. Getting wet is part of the plan; a grey day cancels nothing.
  • It is cancelled or rescheduled only for thunderstorms, a spate with strong currents, an orange or red weather alert, or an express recommendation from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico.
  • If we cancel it for safety, we reschedule your date at no cost or refund you.
  • The river closes at 18:00 by order of the Confederación; that is why arrival is between 10:30 and 12:30, with plenty of margin.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Is the Sella descent safe?

Yes. The tourist stretch from Arriondas to Ribadesella is calm water with the odd gentle rapid (Grade I-II), the canoes are stable and unsinkable, the certified life jacket is included and worn throughout the activity, and qualified instructors give a short briefing before you set off and keep an eye on the river. Like any outdoor activity it has its rules, which is precisely why knowing how to swim is compulsory. Book here.

Do you need to know how to swim to paddle the Sella?

Yes, knowing how to swim is a compulsory requirement by law for every participant, children included. It is required by the insurance companies and by the regulations of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico. The life jacket is an aid, not a substitute. If anyone in your group is not a confident swimmer, it is better to wait for another season and practise first.

Do the instructors ride in the canoe with me?

No. Before you set off, a qualified instructor gives you a short briefing on paddle technique and the safety rules, and during the descent the instructors keep an eye on the river, spread along the watercourse, in case anyone needs help. Only if the river conditions require it (for example, a spate) may an instructor accompany the group; in that case you are notified in advance.

What happens if the canoe capsizes?

It is rare in calm water, and the canoe is unsinkable: it will not sink. If you capsize, the normal thing is to stand up or float with your life jacket to the bank, which is always close by. In the short briefing we explain exactly what to do. That is why the requirement to know how to swim matters so much.

When is the descent cancelled for safety?

In ordinary rain the river is operational and you go down. The descent is only cancelled or rescheduled for thunderstorms, a spate, an orange or red weather alert or an express recommendation from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico. The final decision is always made on safety grounds, and if we cancel it, we reschedule your date or refund you.
