In one sentence: July is the month when the Sella clicks for almost everyone — air at 22 to 25 °C, mild water at 14-17 °C, daylight until 10 pm, scenery still green and fewer canoes on the river than in August. If you've got a family plan, our favourite combo is weekdays in the Premium window of 10:30-12:30.

If you're eyeing dates to paddle the Sella and July is pulling you in, you're on the right track. We've been running descents from Arriondas for more than 25 years and, when family ask us which month we'd suggest to a first-timer, we almost always land on the same answer: July, ideally on a weekday, and ideally early.

In this guide we'll tell you why, with real numbers: how much the thermometer marks, how the water feels, when you should book, what to actually bring and what happens if the Asturian sky decides to do its thing mid-afternoon. No marketing fluff, just the degrees and the lead times we see every season in our booking diary.

What the Sella weather is like in July: air, water and rain for real

Let's start with what people search first when they type "Sella descent in July": the weather. If you want to see how the rest of the summer behaves, you've got the month-by-month Sella climate comparison, but here we go straight into July:

  • Daytime air temperature: between 22 and 25 °C on average. The odd day climbs to 27-28 °C, but eastern Asturias is not Seville. It feels pleasant; you only sweat if you paddle hard.
  • Nighttime air temperature: between 15 and 17 °C. It cools off. If you're sleeping in Arriondas, Ribadesella or Cangas, take a hoodie for dinner outdoors.
  • River water temperature: between 14 and 17 °C in July. For Asturias that's mild, not cold like May or June. When the water splashes, you won't yelp.
  • Sun: long days, sunset around 10 pm. That gives you breathing space to finish the descent, shower and still have dinner in daylight.
  • Rain: July is the driest month of the Asturian summer, but it does rain some days. Usually a short afternoon shower (15-20 min) and then the sun returns. We'll come back to this a bit further down.

Compared to May or June, in July the water no longer forces a wetsuit. It's your call: we hand one over if you ask, but it's not necessary anymore unless you're bringing a very small child who chills quickly. Most adults paddle in swimwear and a quick-dry top and they're perfectly fine.

July vs August on the Sella: why some people prefer coming earlier

It's the question we get most on WhatsApp: "shall I go in July or wait for August?". We'll tell you without marketing because both are good, just different.

If you're coming with small kids or older folks, or if you care about photos without people in the frame, we'll say it without hesitation: July on weekdays. If you're coming with a young group hunting for atmosphere, August. There's no wrong answer.

July in four brushstrokes:

  • Fewer crowds, especially Monday to Thursday. The river feels emptier. Photos come out better.
  • Slightly cooler water (14-17 °C versus 16-19 °C in August). More refreshing.
  • Green scenery: the riverbanks haven't dried out yet. In August some meadow stretches turn yellow.
  • Easier to book: 3-7 days ahead on weekends, 1-2 days on weekdays.

August in four brushstrokes:

  • Party vibe, especially the first weekend thanks to the International Sella Descent (in 2026, Saturday 8 August).
  • Steadier heat, lower chance of rain.
  • More queues and more canoes on the water, particularly Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Book with 2-3 weeks of lead time for weekends.

When to book the Sella descent in July (with numbers, not guesswork)

This comes straight from our booking diary over recent summers, not generic averages. If you'd rather go straight to the live calendar, you've got the option to book the Sella descent in July online with day-by-day availability.

  • Monday to Thursday in July: 1-2 days ahead usually gets you a spot. Some days even booking the same morning works.
  • Fridays in July: better to book 2-3 days ahead.
  • Saturdays and Sundays in July: 3-7 days ahead. On the central weekends (second and third week), even more.
  • Saint James bank holiday (25 July) if it falls well: book a week ahead minimum.

On timing: we run with an open Premium window 10:30-12:30, you arrive whenever you can within that slot, no fixed time. It's the window with the least river saturation and the best light for photos. If you'd like to dig into why that slot is the good one, we break it down in what time of day fewer people hit the river.

The booking policy we apply

Booking ahead is always recommended, but if there's room in the calendar on the same day we'll take you too. We don't take walk-ins at the office: the channels are web, WhatsApp, phone or email. Free cancellation up to 48 h before. If the Cantabrian Water Authority closes the river due to heavy rain (rare in July), we refund 100% or change the date at no cost.

What to bring to the Sella in July: the essentials and what to leave behind

In July the list gets shorter than in colder months. If you want the full kit list for the Sella descent, it's a separate post; here we focus on what actually matters this month.

What you do want to bring:

  • Swimwear on from home: saves you a change.
  • Quick-dry or lycra top. Cotton sticks to your skin.
  • Water shoes or old trainers that can get wet. Don't go barefoot: the river stones graze.
  • Sunscreen SPF 30 or better SPF 50. The reflection off the water doubles the burn. Face, ears, nape and tops of feet, which is where people forget.
  • Cap with a cord or strap. If it flies off, it's gone.
  • Sunglasses with a retainer strap. Regular ones end up on the riverbed.
  • Towel and a full change in a bag to leave in the locker.
  • Mosquito and horsefly repellent: at the riverside bars, especially near 6 pm, they do bite. On the water, no.

What you don't need: a wetsuit (we hand one over if you ask, but in July it's rarely needed), diving goggles or a dry bag for your phone (we give you a lockable locker at base, the phone is best left dry on land). For food, you can bring your own in the dry barrel we provide, or stop for lunch at one of the riverside bars along the route.

Kids, pets and family in July: why this month suits them

If you're coming with kids or with a dog, July is just about the perfect date. And no marketing here: we're telling you what we see at the launch ramp every month.

  • Kids from 5 years old (with a minimum 1.15 m height): in July the mild water takes the fear out of the first splash. They don't cry. In May or June, the cold water can scare them. If you'd like to prepare for a family trip, we go deeper in how the descent goes with kids and, for the youngest ones, in Sella descent with small kids.
  • Pets: we put a canine life jacket on them at no cost and there's no charge for taking them in the canoe. July is ideal for them because they get wet when they want and dry out in the sun in no time. More practical detail in paddling the Sella with a dog.
  • Older folks: the sun doesn't pound the way it does in August. Gentler heat.

Let's tell you honestly: the descent, even the 7 km Mini, takes about 2-3 hours on the water. If you're going with a 5-year-old, that stretch will feel long to them. In July the mild water makes it far more bearable because every splash is pleasant, not a shock. If you're worried about how tiring the descent is, in that post we break it down by age and by stretch.

Minimum age 5 years old and 1.15 m tall. Pets free with canine life jacket at no cost. 2026 price: €25 kids 5-12, €35 adults. You've got the full breakdown on Sella descent prices 2026.

If it rains in the afternoon in July: the Asturian pattern and what to do

Right, here's the deal: you're in Arriondas, the sun's blazing at 11 am, you set off on the water, and at 4 pm a shower hits. Don't panic.

The classic Asturian summer pattern is: short afternoon shower, 15-30 minutes, it clears, and the sun comes back. The activity is not cancelled. The river doesn't surge suddenly (that happens with continuous rain over several days, not with a summer shower), the water doesn't turn dangerous, and you're already wet, so it doesn't change much for you. The only thing: if there's lightning nearby, we stop at a riverside bar until it passes. It's very rare in July that we have to cut a descent short because of rain.

If it's raining before setting off, we check the radar, have a chat with you, and if it makes sense we push back 30-60 minutes. If the Cantabrian Water Authority closes the river (we insist, rare in July), we refund 100% or move the date at no cost.

The river closes at 6 pm

By order of the Cantabrian Water Authority, at 6 pm no canoe can be on the water. In July, with long days until 10 pm, that shouldn't be a problem if you set off in the Premium window of 10:30 to 12:30. If you're torn between Mini or Full and how long each takes, have a look at how long the Sella descent takes.

And that's it: July is, in our view, the month when everything fits. If you'd like to meet the team behind the descent, we tell you about us in who we are, and if you've got a specific question about your day, give us a shout through contact: we reply within hours.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Is the Sella water cold in July?

No. Water temperature in July sits between 14 and 17 °C: refreshing but not cold. Most adults paddle in swimwear and a quick-dry technical top. The wetsuit is optional and, if you ask for it, we hand it over at no cost.

Is July or August better for the Sella descent?

It depends on the plan. July means fewer crowds, greener scenery and slightly cooler water. August brings steadier heat and a party atmosphere (International Sella Descent on Saturday 8 August 2026). For families with small kids, or if you care about photos without people in the frame, July on weekdays is the best pick. We break it down month by month in our best time comparison.

How far ahead should I book the Sella descent in July?

Weekdays: 1-2 days. Weekends: 3-7 days. Bank holidays and long weekends: a week minimum. Booking ahead is always recommended; if the calendar shows availability, we also take same-day. Via web, WhatsApp, phone or email.

Do I need a wetsuit to paddle the Sella in July?

It is not compulsory in July. The water is mild for Asturias (14-17 °C). If you ask for one, we hand it over at no extra cost. Most adults paddle in swimwear and a quick-dry technical top and they are spot on.

What if it rains in the afternoon during the descent in July?

The classic Asturian summer pattern is a short afternoon shower (15-30 minutes) and then the sun comes back. The descent is not cancelled. We only stop if there is lightning nearby. If the Cantabrian Water Authority closes the river (very rare in July), we refund 100% or move the date at no cost.

Can kids and pets come along for the Sella descent in July?

Yes. Kids from 5 years old and 1.15 m tall. Knowing how to swim is a legal requirement for kids too (the life jacket is a help, not a substitute). Pets come free, with a canine life jacket at no extra cost. Our canoes are K3 (up to 3 seats), perfect for two adults with a kid or three adults. July is one of the best months for both because the mild water makes the experience far more comfortable.
