Sella descent canoe for 4 people: combinations, price and how the guide groups the boats

No 4-person canoe exists on the Sella. We explain how four people paddle together in two grouped canoes — combinations, price and rules.

Family paddling the Sella descent canoe for 4 people in two grouped boats from Arriondas to Llovio

In one sentence: there is no 4-person canoe on the River Sella. If there are four of you, you book 2 canoes (2+2 or 3+1) and the guide groups them at the launch so you paddle together for the whole descent. Same price per person, same family experience, with no real separation.

If you have typed "Sella descent canoe 4 people" into Google, you are most likely organising a family outing or a trip with a group of four friends and want to know whether there is one boat for everyone in the same canoe. Let us tell you straight from the start so you get no surprises at the launch: on the Sella the largest canoe in the tourist fleet is the triple (K3, 3 seats maximum). There are no 4-person canoes. And that, far from being a problem, is exactly what lets you paddle with more comfort, more space and more safety.

In this guide we explain how the Sella descent is organised when there are four of you: which canoe combinations work best (2+2, 3+1), how the guide groups the boats so you stay together along the whole river, how much it costs for a family of four, what happens if there are five or six of you, and the real questions we get every week on WhatsApp. We have been in Arriondas for more than 25 years paddling the Sella with families, so we write this guide exactly as we tell it at the front desk.

Family paddling the Sella descent in two canoes grouped by the guide — Arriondas to Llovio
A family of four paddles the Sella in two canoes that the guide groups from the launch. Same pace, same stop, same group photo at the riverside bar.

There is no 4-person canoe on the Sella: the K3 rule explained

Let us start with the part that causes the most confusion: the operating rule on the River Sella is K3, a maximum of 3 seats per canoe. Every company on the river follows this because it is set by safety protocols, public liability insurance and the real manoeuvrability of an open canoe in gentle moving water. A longer boat would be harder to steer in the small rapids at the start of the descent and would increase the risk of a guide not being able to reach it in time if it capsized.

So when you read "4-person canoe on the Sella" out there with no further nuance, you are being given imprecise information. The largest canoe you will see on the river is the triple (K3), with three raised seats lined up bow to stern, each with its own individual backrest. It is the same canoe we use for families of 3, for 2 adults + 1 child and for 3 adults. Beyond that, what is done on the Sella is to group two canoes: the guide repositions the boats at the launch and explains how to paddle side by side so the group does not split up.

That formula — two grouped canoes — works because the Sella is a recreational river, wide and with a gentle, continuous current. It is not a technical river along its navigable stretch: the current carries you on its own, and two canoes can paddle parallel for the whole route with no extra effort. In practice, you stay together the whole time: you stop at the same moment at the mid-route riverside bar, take a photo together at the Pozo del Arco and regroup after every small rapid.

Canoe combinations when there are four of you

These are the two formulas we see most each season at the Arriondas launch, in order of real use:

Option 1 · Two double canoes (2 + 2)

It is the star formula for families of 2 adults + 2 children and for groups of 4 friends. Each canoe carries a pair: an adult and a little one, or two adults. The guide groups the two boats from the launch and explains how to paddle side by side. It works very well because:

  • One adult per canoe: there is always an adult in charge of each boat, which is reassuring when you are with children
  • Siblings do not get bored: each child goes with a parent and feels an active part of the descent
  • More stability: the double canoe is very stable and easy to steer for parents paddling for the first time
  • Easy regrouping: you stop together at the riverside bar, eat on the same side and get back on the water side by side

Option 2 · Triple + single (3 + 1) or triple + double (3 + 2 when there are 5 of you)

If there are 3 adults + 1 child, the formula we most recommend is a triple canoe (K3) with the three adults paddling + a single with the little one accompanied by a guide or by a fifth adult. It also works if two adults want to go with two older children (8-10 years old) who paddle well: a triple with two adults + one child paddling, and a single with the fourth. The triple is our largest canoe and the single is very easy to handle on the Sella, where the current pulls you along the whole time.

An important note: we never hand a single to children on their own. If your combination includes a little one, they always go accompanied by an adult, not on their own in the single.

Option 3 · Custom set-ups (tell us the ages)

If there are 4 of you with an unusual set-up (3 adults + 1 baby… no, wait, babies do not paddle; but for example 1 adult with 3 older children, or 2 grandparents + 2 grandchildren), write to us when booking with the exact ages and we will put together the most comfortable combination. Every family is different. You have the form at book the Sella descent, WhatsApp on the main page and email at contact.

If you take away just one idea: you are not "split up" by paddling in two canoes. The guide groups them and you paddle side by side for the whole descent. It is the standard formula of the Sella for decades and the one that works best for groups of 4.

What it is like inside the triple canoe (the largest on the Sella)

Since the triple canoe is the largest option you will use if there are 3 of you or if you make up a 3+1 when there are four, it is worth knowing what it is like inside. The triple canoe (K3) at Aventura en el Sella is an open, unsinkable canoe, longer than the double, with these features:

  • 3 raised seats with a padded individual backrest (the backrest is our standard, not a paid extra like at other companies on the river)
  • Open, unsinkable hull: even if it filled with water, it would not sink
  • Head always visible above the river level (it is not a closed kayak, there is no feeling of being "wedged in")
  • Central space for a dry barrel with food, phone, towel and a change of clothes
  • Three double paddles handed out at the launch, one per seat
  • Certified life jacket for each occupant (compulsory throughout the whole trip)

The feeling inside is that of a spacious family canoe: there is room to stretch your legs, leave the bag between your feet and pass the sandwich around without awkward balancing. For children it is especially reassuring because they go sitting, not lying down, and see the scenery just like the adults. The double is exactly the same but with two seats instead of three.

Price of the Sella descent for a family of 4 (2026)

Here is the concrete figure. At Aventura en el Sella we charge per person, not per canoe, just like the rest of the companies on the Sella. That is why paddling in two canoes (2+2) costs exactly the same as if a "4-person canoe" existed. The 2026 prices are:

  • Adult (13 and over): €35
  • Child (5 to 12 years): €25
  • Pet: free, with no limit and without taking up a seat

This means that a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children) pays €120 for the full descent, all included (two double canoes with backrests, paddles, life jackets, dry barrel and the bus transfer to the launch).

If the family is 4 adults, it is €140. If there are 3 adults + 1 child, it is €130. There is no surcharge for using two canoes instead of one: you pay the same paddling grouped as a 2+2 as you would if there were a single larger canoe. You can see the detailed breakdown on our Sella descent prices page or book directly from book.

About the Sella "standard"

Many companies on the Sella charge the backrest as an extra (around €1 per person). At Aventura en el Sella the backrest comes as standard in every canoe, doubles, triples and singles. On a 3-4 hour paddle, the backrest is the difference between reaching Llovio with a relaxed back or stretching out tight muscles in the car. It is especially noticeable for anyone with children in front, grandparents paddling with grandchildren and anyone who tends to strain their lower back.

Families with small children: age requirements

We always say this clearly: children under 5 cannot paddle the Sella in a canoe. It is not our rule, it is the standardised minimum safety age on the River Sella, set by common sense and public liability insurance. If your little one is under 5, the safest and most honest thing is to wait a couple of seasons.

The full requirements for a child to paddle are three, and all three must be met at once:

  • Being 5 years old
  • Measuring at least 1.15 m (important so the life jacket fits properly)
  • Knowing how to swim well enough not to panic if they get wet

For everything else about paddling with little ones (clothing, food in the barrel, typical fears, gentler stretches), our dedicated Sella descent with kids page and the editorial guide Sella descent with small kids will help.

Pets on board: how to paddle the Sella with your dog

At Aventura en el Sella pets come along for free and do not take up a seat. That is: a family of 4 with a dog books 4 seats (in two double canoes), and the dog rides in the centre or at the feet of whoever is with it in one of the two canoes. You do not pay for it.

  • Canine life jacket: we provide it, you do not need to bring it. It is highly recommended even if your dog swims well
  • Small and medium breeds adapt better for space
  • Very nervous dogs: if your dog cannot bear water or gets stressed by noise, it is better to leave it on land. The descent is 3-4 hours
  • No lead inside the canoe during paddling (risk of snagging). Only at the launch and the landing

If you are bringing a pet, we recommend you also read our complete guide to the Sella descent with a dog, where we explain what to bring for it (water, treats, an extra towel) and which stretches are gentler if it is its first time.

Large families: if there are 5, 6 or more of you

Applying the same logic as for 4 (two canoes grouped by the guide), if there are more of you we add boats until every seat is covered. These are the most common combinations:

  • There are 5 of you: a triple (K3) + a double (2+1 = 3) that the guide groups. Comfortable and quick
  • There are 6 of you: two triples (3+3) or a triple + a double + a single, depending on ages
  • There are 7-10 of you: a custom combination of triples and doubles. Tell us how many you are, approximate ages and whether you are bringing pets, and we will set up the outing
  • Large groups (stag/hen parties, companies, teams): you have our dedicated guide at Sella descent for groups and stag/hen parties and the Premium Booking option with open hours 10:30-12:30 to arrive without stress

The important thing: tell us when booking the exact number, ages and whether you are bringing a pet. That way we set aside the fleet we need (triples are not unlimited) and put together the most comfortable combination for your group. You can write to us on WhatsApp or book online at book.

What to bring when there are four of you

The good thing about paddling in two grouped canoes is that you have two dry barrels (one per boat), so you split your things between the two without overloading either. These are the basics we recommend:

  • Dry barrel (we give it to you, one per canoe) with a change of clothes, phone and wallet
  • Footwear that won’t come off your foot (water shoes, river sandals, old trainers; never flip-flops without a strap)
  • Water-resistant sun cream already applied before boarding
  • A cap with a cord or strap
  • A UV shirt for the children (the sun on the river reflects a lot)
  • Food in the dry barrel (sandwiches, snacks, fruit · or else stop to eat at one of the riverside bars along the route)
  • A towel and a full change of clothes that you leave on the bus and that await you at the landing

We have a detailed guide with everything at what to bring to the Sella descent.

Which route to choose for a family of four: Mini or Full

From Arriondas there are two routes on the same river. What changes is where the return bus picks you up. Both leave from the same launch in the village. You have the interactive map of the route with all the river landmarks.

  • Mini Sella · 7 km · Arriondas → Toraño · 2-3 hours on the water. It is the family route par excellence. You reach Toraño with time to spare, eat on a river beach or at one of the six riverside bars on the river and the bus brings you back to Arriondas. Recommended with children aged 5-8, pets, grandparents, or if it is your first time in a canoe
  • Full · 14.5 km · Arriondas → Llovio · 3.5-4.5 hours on the water. It is the classic route that follows almost exactly the line of the International Descent. You pass through Toraño, Llordón and the Triongo groyne. For families with slightly older children (9-10+), groups of adults with some stamina and the urge for a long day

The price is the same for Mini and Full, so the choice depends on the pace you want. For more detail, you have how long the Sella descent takes and the best time to paddle the Sella.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Is there a 4-person canoe on the Sella descent?

No. On the River Sella the largest recreational fleet canoe is the triple (K3, 3 seats maximum). For groups of 4 you book two canoes (a double + a double, or a triple + a single) and our guide groups them so you stay together for the whole descent. It is not a sales trick: it is the standard operating rule of the Sella for safety and manoeuvrability.

How do we paddle the Sella if we are a family of 4?

You book 2 double canoes (2+2) or, if you bring a little one, a triple + a single (3+1). The guide groups the canoes at the launch so you paddle side by side, stop together at the riverside bar and regroup at every landmark of the river. It is the formula we use every day with hundreds of families.

How much does the Sella descent cost for a family of 4?

We charge per person, not per canoe. A family of 2 adults + 2 children pays €120 (€35 adult × 2 + €25 child × 2). Four adults pay €140. Three adults + one child, €130. The price includes a canoe with backrest, paddles, life jackets, a dry barrel and the bus transfer. Pets come along for free.

Can my baby go in the canoe?

No. The minimum age on the Sella is 5 years old, plus a height of 1.15 m and being able to swim. It is a standard safety rule of the river, not something at our discretion. If you have a child under 5, the most sensible thing is to wait a summer or two.

Does my dog count as a seat?

No. Pets come along for free and do not take up a seat. A family of 4 with a dog books 4 seats (2 doubles), and the dog rides in the centre of one of the canoes with a canine life jacket that we provide at no cost. More detail in Sella descent with a dog.

Do I have to book in advance if there are four of us?

Yes, we always recommend it, especially in July and August. Coordinating two canoes at the same time with the same guide needs a bit more margin than booking a single one. With 2-3 days’ notice via the website, WhatsApp, phone or email it is plenty. For same-day, we check availability.
