How long does the Sella descent take: 2-3 hours Mini and 4-5 hours Full

Mini = 2-3 hours total. Full = 4-5 hours total. Time on the water is shorter — but the realistic figure includes the stops. Honest timings and how to count back from 6 pm.

Canoe paddling down the Sella River on a summer morning — real timings for the Mini and Full descent from Arriondas

In one sentence: the Mini Sella takes 2-3 hours in total and the Full Sella takes 4-5 hours in total, normal stops at riverside bars and a rest on the bank included. Time on the water with no stops is shorter (1.5-2 h Mini · 3.5-4 h Full), but the realistic figure is the total time.

It is the question we are asked most often on WhatsApp before a booking, and there is a twist to it: time spent paddling is not the same as total time on your day on the river. In this guide we give you both real figures, with normal stops included, so you arrive in Arriondas with the morning well planned and no rush.

We have been paddling the Sella for 25 years with families, couples and groups, and after thousands of descents the conclusion is always the same: the river does not speed up or slow down, but your day stretches by 30-60 minutes compared to "time on the water" as soon as you make two or three stops. And that is perfectly normal, because the stops are part of the plan.

If you want the quick summary by commercial option you have it on the how long the Sella descent takes page. Here we are going deeper into the real factors that extend your day and into how to pick your departure time by counting back from 6 pm.

Canoe paddling down the Sella River on a summer morning · real timings for the descent from Arriondas
Mini Sella 2-3 hours total · Full Sella 4-5 hours total. Times include normal stops at riverside bars and rests on the bank.

The quick answer: 2-3 hours Mini, 4-5 hours Full

If you only want the figure:

  • Mini Sella (7 km · Arriondas → Toraño): between 2 and 3 hours.
  • Full Sella (14.5 km · Arriondas → Fríes): between 4 and 5 hours.

Those are the realistic times with normal stops: one at a riverside bar halfway down and another for photos or to stretch your legs on a river beach. If you paddle non-stop, the times drop to around 1.5-2 hours (Mini) and 3.5-4 hours (Full). If you go with a long break on the bank and several riverside bar stops, the times climb to 3.5-4 hours (Mini) or 5.5-6.5 hours (Full).

Time on the water vs total time: the bit nobody explains

This is the key that almost no guide explains properly, and it is what makes the difference between a relaxed day and a rushed one.

Time on the water is what it would take you if you paddled from Arriondas to the pick-up point without slowing down. The Sella current is gentle in summer (mean flow 4-6 m³/s in July-August), so the river carries you along at about 3-4 km/h with a light paddle stroke. At that pace, the 7 km of the Mini would be 1.5-2 hours on the water and the 14.5 km of the Full would be 3.5-4 hours on the water.

Total time is what it actually takes you because, unless you are in a hurry, you are going to stop. The most common stops:

  • Riverside bar halfway down: 10-30 minutes for a drink, the loo and a rest for your back.
  • Photo on a pretty river beach (there are several): 5-10 minutes.
  • Rest on the bank: 20-40 minutes if you take it easy with a swim and a snack.
  • Typical small mishaps: a kid getting their sunglasses wet, the suncream bottle falling in the water, somebody wanting to swap paddles with the person next to them. Easily another 5-10 minutes.

Add it all up and you have the 30-60 minutes of margin that separate "time on the water" from "real time". That is why we always recommend you plan with total time, never with time on the water.

If you take away one idea: the river does not speed up or slow down, but your day stretches by 30-60 minutes as soon as you make two or three stops. And that is perfectly normal: the stops are part of the plan.

Mini Sella · 2-3 hours on the water and how they break down

The Mini Sella is the most popular option for families with small children, couples doing the descent for the first time and groups that want to combine the river with another activity in the afternoon. It runs from Arriondas to the bridge at Toraño, where our transfer picks you up.

  • Distance: 7 km.
  • Time on the water: 1.5-2 hours at a relaxed pace.
  • Total time with normal stops: 2-3 hours.
  • Total time with long stops (riverside bar + rest + photos): 3.5-4 hours.

To give you an idea: if you set off from Arriondas at 10:30 am on the Mini, you will usually be ringing for the transfer between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. You have the whole afternoon free to eat in Cangas de Onís, head down to the beach at Ribadesella or stay up in the Picos.

If you are travelling with small kids (from 5 years old and 1.15 m in height, the minimum age and height), the Mini is usually more comfortable because three long hours in a canoe are the real limit of their attention span. There are stretches where the river widens and they sit quietly watching the mountains, but by kilometres 5-6 they start asking how much is left.

Full Sella · 4-5 hours on the water and why they feel light

The Full route is the one we recommend for adults, unhurried couples and younger groups who want the complete day. It runs from Arriondas to Fríes (close to Ribadesella), passing the bridge at Toraño and continuing downstream. You have the route step by step on the interactive route map.

  • Distance: 14.5 km.
  • Time on the water: 3.5-4 hours at a relaxed pace.
  • Total time with normal stops: 4-5 hours.
  • Total time with long stops (2 riverside bars + rest + photos): 5.5-6.5 hours.

If you set off from Arriondas at 10:30 am on the Full route, you will normally finish between 2:30 pm and 4 pm. If you take your time at the stops, up to 5 pm. You arrive comfortably ahead of the 6 pm river closure.

If you set off at noon on the Full route, things are tighter: you would finish between 4 pm and 5:30 pm with normal stops, or very close to the 6 pm closing time if you linger. That is why, if you pick the Full route, we recommend setting off before 11 am.

The real stops: how much they add to your day

These are the average times we see in real groups after 25 years organising descents. They are guides, every group is different, but they are useful for an honest piece of arithmetic:

  • Short riverside bar stop (a soft drink, the loo, back on the canoe): 10-15 minutes.
  • Long riverside bar stop (an alcohol-free beer, a chat, a photo): 25-30 minutes.
  • Rest on the bank (a swim at a river beach, a snack, photos): 20-40 minutes if you take it easy.
  • Quick photo on a river beach: 5-10 minutes.
  • Paddle swap / life jacket adjustment / suncream: 5 minutes.
  • A kid who got wet and needs a dry t-shirt: 10 minutes.

On the Sella you will find 6 riverside bars dotted along the route (Riverland, El Oasis, El Prau, El Bosque, La Mediana and Toraño). Bear in mind that alcohol is not allowed on the river (a Confederación rule, we follow it without exception) and that common sense applies: one long stop can be wonderful, two long stops plus a long break on the bank push you right up against the closing time if you picked the Full route.

Counting back from 6 pm: how to pick your departure time

The Sella closes at 6 pm by rule of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico. At that hour every canoe must be off the water, and transfer pick-up points stop operating. It is not flexible.

The most practical thing is to count back from 6 pm:

  • 10 am departure · Mini comfortable (finish 12 pm-1:30 pm) · Full comfortable (finish 2 pm-4 pm).
  • 10:30 am departure · Mini comfortable (finish 12:30 pm-2 pm) · Full comfortable (finish 2:30 pm-4:30 pm).
  • 11 am departure · Mini comfortable (finish 1 pm-2:30 pm) · Full with margin (finish 3 pm-5 pm).
  • Noon departure · Mini comfortable (finish 2 pm-3:30 pm) · Full tight (finish 4 pm-6 pm).
  • 1 pm departure · Mini comfortable (finish 3 pm-4:30 pm) · Full very tight (right up against closing).
  • 2 pm departure · Mini with margin (finish 4 pm-5:30 pm) · Full not recommended.

If you are unsure when to set off, we cover it in more detail in our post on the best time of day to do the Sella descent. In short: before 11 am if you pick the Full, before 1 pm if you pick the Mini.

Premium has an open window from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

The Premium option has an open departure window from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, with no need to pick an exact time when you book: you arrive when it suits you within that window and we kit you out as soon as you are ready. That window is designed precisely to give you plenty of margin on either route.

Times by profile: family, couple, group

After so many years, the times we see for each profile are pretty consistent:

Family with kids (5-12)

  • Mini: 2.5-3 hours total. One riverside bar stop of 15-20 min, photos, short break on a river beach.
  • Full: we do not recommend it for children under 10-11, it is too many hours on the water. If the family insists, plan on 5.5-6 hours. We go deeper in the Sella descent with small kids.

Relaxed couple

  • Mini: 2-3 hours. Usually the choice if they are heading on to eat in Ribadesella or Cangas de Onís afterwards.
  • Full: 4.5-5.5 hours. The ideal option if they want the complete day.

Group of friends (younger crowd, stag/hen, birthdays)

Sporty or experienced couple

  • Mini: 1.5-2 hours non-stop, no breaks.
  • Full: 3.5-4 hours non-stop. They arrive already in shape and enjoy the paddling.

In short: the figures you need to remember

  1. Mini Sella: 2-3 hours total, realistic (1.5-2 h on the water + stops).
  2. Full Sella: 4-5 hours total, realistic (3.5-4 h on the water + stops).
  3. Stops add 30-60 minutes: riverside bar, river beach, photos.
  4. The river closes at 6 pm: count back from there.
  5. If you pick the Full, set off before 11 am. If you pick the Mini, before 1 pm.
  6. Premium has a flexible window from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, no need to pick an exact time.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

How long does the Sella descent take?

It depends on the route. The Mini Sella (7 km, Arriondas to Toraño) takes 2-3 hours in total with normal stops. The Full Sella (14.5 km, Arriondas to Fríes) takes 4-5 hours in total. Time on the water with no stops drops to 1.5-2 hours for the Mini and 3.5-4 hours for the Full. You have the short commercial summary on how long the Sella descent takes.

What time do I need to set off if I pick the Full Sella?

We recommend setting off from Arriondas before 11 am if you pick the Full route, because the river closes at 6 pm by order of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico and you need margin for riverside bar stops and photos. Setting off at noon with the Full route is doable but tight. The Premium option has an open departure window from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

How much do stops add to the total time?

Normal stops add 30-60 minutes to your time on the water. A short riverside bar stop is 10-15 minutes, a long one is 25-30 minutes, a rest on a river beach is 20-30 minutes, and photos add 5-10 minutes each. That is why we always recommend doing the maths with total time, never with water time alone.

What happens if I do not finish by 6 pm?

The 6 pm closing time is a rule from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico and it is not flexible. Every canoe must be off the water by that hour, and the transfer pick-up points stop operating. That is why it is important to count back from 6 pm and, if you pick the Full route, to set off before 11 am.

How long does a family with kids take to paddle the Sella?

With children aged 5 to 12, the Mini Sella takes 2.5-3 hours with one riverside bar stop and a short break on the bank. We do not recommend the Full route for kids under 10-11 because it is too many hours on the water for their attention span. Bear in mind that the minimum age is 5 years old and 1.15 m in height for life jacket safety.
