Sella descent with accommodation: pack, DIY or just for the day

We do not sell a descent + hotel pack because we are not a hotel operator. We compare the three real formulas with honest 2026 prices so you decide for yourself.

Weekend getaway with the Sella descent and accommodation near Arriondas · rural hotel and canoe on the river

In one sentence: we do not sell a "descent + hotel" pack because we are not a hotel operator. We walk you through the three real formulas (closed pack, booking separately or coming just for the day) with honest 2026 prices so you can choose for yourself with a clear head.

You reach the stage of "right, we want to do the Sella descent… and where do we sleep?" and the doubts begin. Up pop websites offering you a neat descent + hotel pack at a single price, others where you have to book the canoe on one side and the accommodation on the other, and there is always the option of coming, doing the descent and going back the same day with no overnight stay.

We are going to tell you the truth, no make-up: we are a Sella descent company, not a hotel operator. We do not sell a "descent + 1 night hotel" pack. What we can do (and have been doing for 25 years with every family that comes through our office) is help you decide which formula really suits you, with real market figures and honesty about what each option gives you and what it takes away.

In this article we compare the three real routes: all-inclusive pack, booking separately (DIY) or coming just for the day with no accommodation. With concrete 2026 prices, not generous estimates.

Weekend getaway with the Sella descent and accommodation near Arriondas · rural hotel and canoe on the river
Sella descent plus accommodation: three real ways to organise it, none of which goes through our office as a closed pack.

What a "Sella descent with accommodation pack" is and what it usually includes

When an Asturian tourism company sells you a Sella descent pack with hotel included, the usual offering is this:

  • 1 or 2 nights in a rural hotel, a 2-3 star hotel or a rural house in the area (Arriondas, Cangas de Onís or nearby).
  • The Sella descent by canoe with all the kit (canoe, paddle, life jacket, optional wetsuit and the return transfer by coach).
  • Sometimes a transfer from the hotel to the launch point (not always, worth asking).
  • Insurance for the activity included.

Some packs add extras: a second activity (a 4×4 route through the Cares, buggies, caving), breakfast or dinner on the first night. What is not usually included: drinks at the hotel, meals during the day of the descent, or transport from your home town to Arriondas. That part is on you.

Honesty notice

Packs are not "magic" or "impossible offers". They are the sum of two services (bed + descent) that the company coordinates for you. That has a value (zero hassle on your part), but it also carries a coordination cost that you pay.

Real market prices in 2026 (an honest comparison)

We have looked at what the main Asturian companies who do offer packs charge. Real figures, VAT included, per person:

  • 2 nights + descent: from €82 (low season) · from €98 (July/September) · from €138 (Easter and August).
  • 2 nights + descent + double buggy: from €118 (low) · from €138 (mid) · from €166 (high).
  • 2 nights + descent + 4×4 Cares route: from €119 (low) · from €140 (mid) · from €162 (high).
  • 2 nights double room + descent (rural hotel in Llanes): from €130 all year round.

Now let us take the typical case: a couple, 2 nights, descent, August. Pack = around €138 per person = €276 for the couple. If you book separately:

  • Sella descent on the longest route: €35 adult × 2 = €70.
  • A 2-3⭐ hotel in Arriondas in August, double room: between €70 and €90 per night = around €160 for the 2 nights.
  • DIY total: €230 for the couple.

Saving by booking separately: around €46 in this scenario (≈ 17%). In low season the difference gets closer to 20%. It is not a fortune, but it is real. The pack charges you between 15% and 20% more than booking separately: that is the price for not managing the two bookings yourself.

Option A · Descent + hotel pack (everything in one booking)

If you decide to go this way, you do not book it with us (we do not have it). You look for it with Asturian operators who do coordinate both pieces, or on platforms such as Buendía, Wonderbox and Smartbox.

The good:

  • One single arrangement, one single payment. Ideal if you are in a hurry or planning the trip in one afternoon.
  • They usually include the transfer hotel-launch point and back, which saves on the car or a taxi.
  • It is perfect as a gift: if you want to surprise someone with an adventure getaway, the pack is handed over "closed" with no organising for the recipient to do.
  • If you do not know Asturias, it takes the choice of hotel off your plate: it comes pre-selected.

The not so good:

  • You pay 10-20% more than booking separately. That difference pays for the coordination.
  • The hotel is imposed (or at most you choose between 2-3 closed options). If you are fussy about the view, the décor, the bed or the bathroom, it may not fit.
  • A more rigid change policy. Changing the date or cancelling is usually trickier than with two independent bookings.
  • The breakdown is not always transparent: sometimes you do not know how much the hotel costs and how much the descent.

Who it pays off for: an experience gift (no question, the pack is the most convenient), last-minute planners in August, families without a car who value the transfer, and a first time in Asturias with no time to choose between 30 hotels.

Option B · Booking descent and hotel separately (DIY)

It is what most of our families do. And it is what we would recommend if you are staying 1 or 2 nights.

The good:

  • You save 10-20% compared to the pack.
  • You choose the exact hotel you like: with a pool, in the old town of Cangas, with river views, a family rural house, an apartment in Ribadesella facing the sea… whatever you fancy.
  • Total flexibility to change dates. You change the descent with us, the hotel with Booking, Airbnb or the hotel's own website.
  • You see real reviews of the hotel before booking (not "3⭐ hotel to be confirmed").

The not so good:

  • Two separate bookings. You have to line up the dates yourself.
  • Hotel-launch point transport on your own. If your hotel is more than 5 km from the start point, you need a car. Good news: the return is always included in the descent (coach from the finish back to your car in Arriondas).
  • You plan in two steps, not one.
How to do it step by step

1. Book the descent first with the company that convinces you most (price, reviews, what is included). If you choose us, you lock it in here in 2 minutes.
2. Then look for a hotel in Arriondas, Cangas de Onís or Ribadesella with the date already fixed. Booking, Airbnb or the hotel's own website.
3. Check the distance hotel-Arriondas on Google Maps. If you go over 15 km, factor in the car or public transport.

Option C · A single day with no overnight stay (the forgotten formula)

This is the option that gets the least publicity because operators have no interest in selling it (there is no accommodation to sell). But for a huge share of the families who come to the Sella, it is the most sensible one.

You leave home in the morning, arrive in Arriondas around 10:30-11:00, do the descent (between 3 and 5 hours depending on the route you choose), eat on a river beach or at one of the riverside bars along the route, reach the finish in the mid-afternoon, head back on our coach to Arriondas and by the late afternoon-evening you are home again. The river closes at 18:00 by order of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Cantábrico, so the timings fit a day out like a glove.

When it pays off:

  • You are coming from less than 100-120 km away. Gijón, Oviedo, Avilés, Santander, Llanes, Mieres, Langreo… are perfectly manageable distances for a there-and-back trip. You have the table of distances from your city on the how to get there page.
  • You just want to "live the experience" of the descent, you do not need a long getaway.
  • You are coming with small children and prefer to sleep at home with your own beds and routines. We break it down in Sella descent with small kids.
  • A tight budget. You save the entire cost of the accommodation (€60-100 per night).

When it does NOT pay off: you are coming from more than 200 km away (Madrid, the Basque Country, deep Galicia, Castilla) or you want to visit Picos de Europa, Covadonga, beaches or Cangas at a relaxed pace. For that you need 2-3 nights minimum.

Our recommendation with no sugar-coating

After 25 years watching families come down the Sella, this is what we usually advise when someone rings us unsure:

  • If you are coming from more than 200 km away: book 1-2 nights in Arriondas or Ribadesella + the descent separately. You save money and choose the hotel you like.
  • If you are coming from less than 100 km away: a single day with no overnight stay. You drop the hotel cost and still have a complete experience.
  • If it is a gift or you have no time to plan: a closed pack. You will pay a little more, but you take the hassle off your plate. Look for it on platforms such as Buendía, Wonderbox or directly with Asturian operators who offer this option.
  • If you are coming as a couple for a romantic getaway: DIY with a charming rural hotel in Cangas or Ribadesella. There are lovely options no pack will ever place you in.

What we will never tell you: "book the pack with us". Because we do not have it. You book the descent with us, the hotel wherever you like, and our team guides you without selling you hot air.

We charge no commission for sending you to any hotel: we have no affiliation with any chain. We give you the real areas and price ranges so you can decide. If you want to go hotel by hotel, you have it in where to stay near the Sella descent.

  • Arriondas centre · 1-2 minutes from the launch point. 4-5 hotels of 2-3 stars in the centre. Couple, double room: €60-90 per night (mid-high). Pros: no car needed, a river-village atmosphere, restaurants and cider houses a step away.
  • Rural houses around the Sella · 5-15 km from Arriondas. Charming houses, meadows, sometimes a pool. €70-120 per night for 2-4 people. Pros: peace and quiet, pure nature, ideal with kids. Cons: you need a car.
  • Ribadesella · 15 km from the Sella. More hotel and apartment options, the sea a step away (the promenade of Santa Marina beach). Couple: €70-100 per night. Pros: you combine river + beach, a lively tourist atmosphere, seafood cuisine. Cons: 20-25 minutes by car to the launch point.
  • Cangas de Onís · 10 km from the Sella. A lovely historic centre (the Roman Bridge), the natural gateway to Picos de Europa and Covadonga. €75-110 per night. Pros: you combine Sella + lakes + mountains in the same getaway. Cons: in August it fills up, better to book ahead.
Honest tip

Prices rise by up to 40% in the first week of August (the Descenso Internacional del Sella, Saturday 8 August in 2026) and at Easter. If your date is flexible, avoid those peaks and you will see the difference on the bill.

Lock in the descent with us, the hotel wherever you like

If you are clear on it and just need to lock in the descent (with or without accommodation on your own), book here in 2 minutes. The policy is the usual one: €25 children aged 5 to 12 · €35 adults · pets free, minimum age 5 years and 1.15 m, return coach included and booking by website, WhatsApp, phone or email (not at the counter, as we want to be sure we have a canoe and a guide for you).

If you are torn between the Mini Sella (family-friendly, 7 km) or the Complete (the classic, 14.5 km), you have the updated 2026 prices and exactly what is included and the Premium window open 10:30-12:30 with flexible arrival. Frequently asked questions

What you ask us most

Do you offer a Sella descent + hotel pack?

No. We are a Sella descent company, not a hotel operator. What we do offer is honest information on where to stay in Arriondas, Cangas de Onís or Ribadesella, plus the descent with no middlemen. If you want a closed pack, look for it with Asturian operators who do manage them, or on platforms such as Buendía and Wonderbox.

Where is it better to stay, Arriondas or Ribadesella?

Arriondas if you want to be 2 minutes from the launch point with a village feel. Ribadesella if you want to combine river and beach (15 km from the descent). Cangas de Onís if you are also interested in Picos de Europa and Covadonga. For families with small children, a rural house around the Sella is a great option. We go into it in where to stay near the descent.

Do you have to book hotel and descent at the same time?

It is not compulsory, but it is wise to do it on the same day so the dates line up. We recommend you lock in the descent first (the river date is the fixed one) and then book the hotel. In August and Easter, do it at least 3-4 weeks ahead. The rest of the year, 1-2 weeks is usually enough.

How much does a descent + hotel pack cost in 2026?

The 2-night packs with descent run from €82 per person in low season and from €138 per person in August. By booking descent and hotel separately you can save between 10% and 20%. If you are coming from less than 100 km away, also consider coming just for the day with no overnight stay.

Is the pack worth it if I only come to do the descent?

If you come just for the day with no overnight stay, the pack gives you nothing: there is no hotel left to combine. In that case book the descent only at €25 children 5-12 and €35 adults (pets free) and head back to your base in the afternoon.
